John Frederick Brokaw
John F. Brokaw, 79, of rural Stronghurst, Illinois, died at 10:20 a.m. Saturday February 9, 2013 at his home. He was born September 27, 1933 near Stronghurst, the son of George and Mary Gunter Brokaw. On December 6, 1958, he married Marjorie Logan in Macomb, Illinois. She preceded her in death on October 15, 1996.
John was a graduate of Media-Wever High School and served four years in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Following his military service, he returned home and farmed all of his life near Raritan. He had served on the Raritan Cemetery Board and the Raritan Township Board Of Supervisors. He was a member of the Stronghurst American Legion and the Raritan Reformed Church, where he also served as a board member. He enjoyed collecting antiques, especially antique metal tractor seats, guns, tools and wind vanes.
Survivors include two sons- Edwin (Lisa) Brokaw of rural Stronghurst, Frederick (Margaret) Brokaw of Smithshire, IL., six grandchildren, one great grandchild,(expected to arrive in March 2013), two sisters- Lois Campbell of Stronghurst, Lillian Bray of LaHarpe, and one brother- Jack Brokaw of Stronghurst. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one brother- James W. “Jim” Brokaw.
The funeral for John Brokaw will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday February 13, 2013 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Terry Muller officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Raritan Cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Banks & Beals, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Tri-County Cattlemen’s Association Scholarship Fund.
