Our tradition of family service began in 1927 when funeral director John Banks founded the Banks Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Illinois. The funeral home changed locations a few times along LaHarpe's Main Street before Banks set up the current facility at 504 East Main Street in the 1940s.
In 1948, Dean Beals, a graduate of St. Louis Mortuary College, arrived in the area and began working for the Martin Funeral Home in Dallas City and the Mellor Funeral Home in Stronghurst. He met his future bride, Patsy Banks, while assisting on a funeral service in LaHarpe. Dean and Patsy were married in 1950 and when Dean soon joined his father-in-law in his business, the name was changed to Banks & Beals Funeral Home. John Banks passed away in 1962, but his name and the tradition of service he started remains today.
In 1975, Dean's son Kevin Beals joined the family business, and in 1977, his brother Kris also joined the group. In 1978, Banks and Beals marked a period of expansion and growth by purchasing the Fiedler Funeral Homes in Dallas City and Stronghurst. Following the death of Dean Beals in 1986, Kevin and Kris continued the tradition began by their father and grandfather.
In 2000, Banks & Beals replaced the older Dallas City facility with a beautiful new chapel located on the grounds where the famous Riverview Supper Club once stood.
In 2012, Mitch Beals joined the family business and in 2013, Mason Beals also joined the business. They are the sons of Kevin and Sherry Beals. They both graduated from Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg with a degree in Mortuary Science. They become the fourth generation funeral directors, following in the footsteps of their father, grandfather, Dean Beals, and great-grandfather, John Banks.
